Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is one way that you can have current skills and knowledge assessed by a registered training organisation to see if they meet today's industry standards.  RPL assessment recognises your skills and knowledge no matter how, when or where your learning occurred.

RPL could provide you with a full or part qualification. It could also be used to identify what training you may need to complete a qualification.

Am I eligible?

Question: I have been working as a supervisor for a Building company for a number of years. I have not had any formal management training, however I am confident in planning and delivering small construction projects. My daily duties require me to deal with project stakeholders, delegate tasks to other employees and complete a range of reports and documents such as quotes, variation requests, status reports, budgets and work schedules. Can I receive credit for this?

Answer: Yes, very likely, however you will be required to apply for recognition or prior learning (RPL), or alternatively when you enrol in the course ask for accelerated progression.

A Few Tips on RPL: One thing to keep in mind with RPL, it's like being a court prosecutor in that you will need to do the work to demonstrate to the assessor that you are competent. The best way to do this is print off each unit of competency for the course which you need and intend to do (electives if any exist) and look at the section called "critical aspects of evidence". This details what a person must demonstrate to be deemed competent, and should be used by the assessor when determining what to assess you on.

From this gather copies of any evidence which demonstrates the things listed in the critical aspects of evidence section on the unit of competence. Course reports, third party reports (I have even used PR66 reports) evidence of work done.

· you can use the same piece of evidence as many times as you want as long as it is relevant to each unit.
· While not mandatory, I often suggest applicants address RPL for each unit separate, in other words package each copies of evidence with the particular unit, if you need to copy more than once so be it.
· Don't expect the assessor to do the work for you, for them it's another thing to do in their busy day so make it as easy and simple for them to process. If they can clearly see that you are competent from the evidence presented, they can make a decision quickly without any doubts.
· Remember, assessor are audited and  must be able to justify why they deemed an applicant competent. Because of this, some tend to err on the side of caution. This combined with some applicant's lack of willingness to do the work required to gather sufficient evidence is why some RPL applications are not successful.
From my experiences these have been the most successful way I have gained RPL through courses.
